Donated by General Palmer in the early 1900s,
the 737 acres of trails offer hikers and mountain bikers varied
and ever changing scenic adventures. One of the city’s
most prominent landmarks, the park is located right in the heart
of the city. Cactus lovers will thoroughly enjoy the upper plateau
while the Mesa and Templeton Trails provide hikers with 4.7
miles of scenic splendor. The Ute Crest Yucca Area takes you
on an easy 2.3 mille loop along the edge of the bluffs with
outstanding views of Pikes Peak and downtown Colorado Springs. |
One thing is for certain, Colorado Springs is
a recreational paradise. For those
who enjoy the outdoors, there is hunting, fishing and camping
in designated areas in and around Colorado Springs. It would also be hard to mention recreation without mentioning skiing. Colorado Springs is just a few
hours from Vail, Keystone, Breckenridge and Aspen. For the
more adventurous, there’s hang gliding, skydiving, river
rafting and mountaineering.
For those of us who like their sports a little less challenging,
there are several parks, bowling alleys, and lots of places to run, skate, play racquetball or tennis, and swim. The Post Time Greyhound Park also offers
plenty of spectator excitement.
If you love football, the Air Force Academy Falcons play
in the Mountain West Conference, competing against such powerhouses
as Brigham Young in inter-league play as well as inter-service
play with the Naval Academy and West Point.
In other college sports, Colorado College consistently provides excitement with their nationally ranked hockey team.
For children, there are a number of youth leagues and park
programs for nearly every sport imaginable, from Little League
to tennis to hockey and skiing.
Finally, Colorado Springs is headquarters to the United States
Olympic Committee as well as 20 national governing bodies
for Olympic sports. The center serves as an excellent training
ground for future Olympic athletes. |
